Ambon
The gateway and the only reliable air link. Worth two nights in its own right for the muck diving at Laha, some of the best critter photography in Indonesia, and a colonial and wartime history that few guides outside Maluku can tell properly.
Banda Neira
The heart of it. A volcanic caldera ringed by nutmeg groves, a Dutch fort above the harbour, walls that drop into clear water, and Gunung Api rising out of the bay. Accommodation is guesthouse-grade at best. Clients who understand that in advance come back changed by it.
The Kei Islands
Pasir Panjang is among the finest beaches in the country and almost nobody is on it. Kei works as a soft landing after Banda, or as a standalone beach week for a client who wants genuine emptiness rather than a resort strip.
Flights and season — the honest version
Ambon connects through Jakarta or Makassar. Banda is reached by a small aircraft or the passenger ferry, and both are weather-dependent and prone to change. We build a spare day into every Banda programme as standard and price it in, because a client who misses an international connection out of Ambon will remember nothing else about the trip. The practical window is roughly September to April; the rough season genuinely closes the sea crossings.
What to promise
Promise significance, water and space. Do not promise luxury, punctual aircraft or fast connectivity. Our trade desk will tell you when a Maluku enquiry is better routed to Raja Ampat instead, because sending the wrong client is worse for both of us than losing the booking.
