Understanding the Client
Wildlife travellers are not general sightseers who like animals. They will accept basic accommodation, brutal start times and long waits, and they will not accept a guide who cannot identify what they are looking at. Many arrive with a target list. The single most valuable thing an agent can do is establish whether the client is a lister chasing endemics or a general naturalist who wants good encounters, because the itineraries barely overlap.
Where to Send Them
Sulawesi and Wallacea
The endemism capital. Tangkoko in the north for black-crested macaques, tarsiers and hornbills; Lore Lindu for the serious endemics. This is where committed birders want to go, and it needs a specialist guide rather than a general one.
Sumatra
Bukit Lawang and Gunung Leuser for wild orangutans, with Sumatran hornbills and gibbons alongside. Way Kambas in the south for elephants and rare pittas.
Borneo and Papua
Tanjung Puting for orangutans and proboscis monkeys from a river boat. West Papua for birds-of-paradise — genuinely remote, logistically demanding and the reason many birders come to Indonesia at all.
Komodo and the marine side
Komodo dragons under ranger guidance, and the manta aggregations that make Raja Ampat and Komodo world-class for marine wildlife.
Ethical Standards Are Commercial Standards
This clientele notices. No feeding for photographs, no baiting, no captive animals presented as wild, respectful distances at primate sites and no touching. Practicalities
Early starts are the norm — most activity is in the first three hours of light. Accommodation near the good sites is usually simple, and clients should be told so. Optics are the client's own, but transport with space for tripods and a vehicle that will stop on request are ours to provide.
