Indonesia has roughly 130 active volcanoes and some of Asia's best jungle trekking, and the trade sells almost all of it as one undifferentiated category. It is not. The gap between a sunrise stroll up Batur and a three-day ascent of Rinjani is enormous, and mis-grading a client into the wrong one is the most avoidable complaint in adventure travel.
A Working Difficulty Scale
Easy: Batur sunrise
Two hours up in the dark from Kintamani, a well-trodden path, sunrise over Lake Batur and Mount Agung beyond. Suitable for most reasonably fit adults and older children. The most sellable trek in Bali.
Moderate: Bromo and Ijen
Bromo is mostly jeep with a short walk and a stairway; the effort is the cold and the hour, not the climb. Ijen is ninety minutes uphill starting at 2am, with an optional steep descent into the crater. Both need warm layers and a genuine willingness to lose a night's sleep.
Demanding: Rinjani
Indonesia's second-highest volcano, on Lombok: two to three days, camping on the crater rim, a punishing scree ascent to the summit for those who go all the way. Porters and camps are included but this is a real mountain and it should only be sold to clients with hiking experience. The park closes in the wettest months, roughly January to March.
Specialist: Gunung Leuser
Jungle rather than volcano — one to three days from Bukit Lawang in Sumatra, humid, steep, muddy and rewarded with wild orangutans. Difficulty is underestimated because the altitude is low; the terrain is not.
Guides, Permits and Non-Negotiables
Licensed guides are mandatory on the national-park treks and sensible everywhere else. Park fees apply and change; they belong in the quotation rather than as a surprise on the trail. Group ratios matter on Rinjani and Leuser, and a cheap operator running twelve clients to one guide is cutting the thing that keeps people safe.
Briefing Clients Honestly
State the start time, the ascent in metres, the surface underfoot and the total hours. Require proper footwear — not trainers on Rinjani. Warn about altitude cold on every volcano; clients who packed for the tropics are consistently caught out. And be clear that summit success is weather-dependent, so nobody treats a turned-back day as a failure of service.
