Net Rates, Markup and Commission: How Indonesia DMC Pricing Works

A net rate is the price a DMC charges your agency with no commission built in — you add your own markup and keep the difference. That single mechanic is what separates B2B ground handling from the retail world, and it decides how much of a programme's value ends up on your side of the invoice. This guide sets out where the margin actually sits, what belongs inside a quotation, and the small contractual details that quietly protect or erode it.

Net Versus Commissionable: Why It Matters

A commissionable rate is a published price with an agreed percentage returned to you after travel. A net rate is a wholesale price with nothing added: what you charge the client is entirely your decision. Net pricing gives you three things commission does not — control over your own positioning, margin that does not depend on a supplier paying you months later, and the freedom to package services so the client cannot line-item compare you against a booking site.

The trade-off is that net rates put the pricing decision on your desk. A DMC that quotes net is telling you what the ground costs; what the client pays is your commercial call, and so is the risk if you price it wrong.

What Sits Inside a Quotation

The costed lines

A serious Indonesia quotation itemises accommodation by room category and season, transfers by vehicle class and distance, guiding by language and day, entrance and park fees, and any domestic flights or boat sectors. Ask for it broken out. A single bundled figure is impossible to compare, impossible to adjust when the client changes dates, and impossible to defend when a competitor undercuts you by dropping something you did not know was included.

The lines that are easy to miss

Park and permit fees in Komodo and Raja Ampat, ranger charges, high-season surcharges, gala-dinner supplements over Christmas and New Year, and the cost of a vehicle repositioning empty between islands. These are the items that turn an attractive headline number into an argument at final invoicing. A quotation that names them up front is more trustworthy than one that is merely cheaper.

Where Your Margin Really Comes From

Markup on the ground cost is the obvious part. The less obvious part is programme design: an itinerary sequenced so no vehicle runs empty, so hotel nights fall where the contracted rate is strongest, and so a domestic flight replaces an eight-hour transfer, costs less to operate and sells for more. Margin created by good routing is margin that does not come out of the client's pocket or the supplier's.

Upselling is the third layer, and in Indonesia it is unusually productive: a phinisi charter in place of day boats, a private guide in place of a shared coach, a villa in place of a resort room. Our RFQ builder is designed so those alternatives come back priced side by side rather than as an afterthought.

Protecting the Margin You Quoted

Three practical habits. First, get validity dates in writing: rates move with season and with the rupiah, and a quotation without an expiry is a quotation you will end up arguing about. Second, confirm what is guaranteed versus what is on request — a room type held on request is not a room type sold. Third, read the release-back dates on any blocked space, because a quiet release costs you nothing and a missed one costs you the whole allocation.

None of this is exotic. It is the same discipline any wholesale relationship needs, applied to a destination where distances are long, seasons are sharp and a single misread ferry schedule can rewrite a day's costing.
